Tishman Construction, in a joint venture, served as Construction Manager, to transform the historic former Naval Ordnance Laboratory, built in 1946, into the Office of the Commissioner. The restoration brings the exterior façades, historic lobby, monumental stairs and conference rooms back to their original condition, and upgrades the office space to reflect current standards. Tishman also managed the installation of a state-of-the-art security center in the basement of the building.
Because Building 1’s ceiling heights are lower than in new buildings designed today, special care had to be taken to integrate ducts and mechanical systems so that the ceilings didn’t drop below the window heights. The project was designed to LEED® Silver standards, but achieved LEED Gold certification at no additional cost.
